History:
From the 1888-99 Announcements: "The commission and faculty of the school, appreciating the close
relationship between a strong, healthy body, and an active, vigorous brain, have introduced a system of
physical culture as a means toward that end.
When a student enters the Apprentice Class he undergoes a thorough physical examination, and has all his
measurements accurately taken, so that he may be given that exercise best suited to his particular case.
He is required, at regular hours, to take this exercise, under the supervision of an instructor.
In order to make the system of physical culture not only a benefit, but also a pleasure, a gymnasium has
been fitted up in an attractive manner with the most modern and improved apparatus. In addition to the
gymnasium, a baseball ground, tennis court, football ground, and running tract have been put in shape."
