History:
The 1895-96 Announcement notes that "the course in Chemistry extends through two years, beginning with the Junior year and ending with the Middle year." In the Junior year, general chemistry was taken both terms; in the middle year, the fall and spring term included applied chemistry, e.g. laboratory work. The description for the Middle Year states: "Two afternoons of each week are give[n] to work in the Chemical Laboratory during the Middle Year. The Fall term begins with experimental work preparatory to qualitative analysis, which is next taken up and continued through the year. About one hundred of the more common ores and minerals are also studied during this time, and a number of specimens are given to each student for analysis. The work in the laboratory is carefully supervised to insure that each experiment is neatly and properly conducted and that its significance is clearly understood. The student is not allowed to learn separation by rote, but is required to ascertain the chemical changes involved and express them by appropriate equations. That the principles involved are understood is ascertained by frequent questionings and examinations..The Department of Chemistry is well equipped for the present work. It occupies the east wing of the Third Floor [of the Academic Building]. The lecture room will seat about one hundred students, and is provided with a lecture table, with gas, water, hood, sinks, etc. There are two laboratories capable of accomodating fifty students, each desk has gas, water, sink, closet and drawers. There are also a store room and balance room."
