Opr # C 185 St. Louis, Mo May 26, 1918 Having to discontinue my service I left for St. Louis Mo. Arriving here May 25th. The reason I was uncovered at F.B. and C.M. was due to a misunder- standing and refusing to divulge Co business. Before leaving St. Louis Mo I sent my wife home with an understanding with her father that I was not able to have her along but would send her necessary money and could leave her with them for a period. Not knowing the position and trust I held. Mr. Sample thought I deserted his daughter and was lying as to what I was really doing. On arriving at Atlanta, Mr. Sample looked me up through the Post Office Department. Who giving an address which was wrong made him all the more suspicious of me. All calling on different parties in that nieghbor- hood they told Mr. Sample I had been living with other women and the said parties had requested me to move to other quarters not knowing the wife and father were in Atlanta, they having not notified me be letter or telegraph and besides working out of Atlanta in East Point it was impossible for them to find me. They went to the police department and were holding a conference in the post office when I come in for my mail at 10 o'clock. Detectives at once inquired about my business which I refused to state Who then had one go to those parties that stated that I had lived and been requested to leave their hostelery's to be identified which proved false and Mr. Sample being satisfied as to this asked me to care for my wife as he was leaving. It being 12 o'clock PM I did not have means to do so and believing I was trying to skip out again, he had officers look for rooms and asked parties where I stated I roomed if I really roomed there who told them also what Mr. Sample accused me of. On securing rooms for my wife in a different location and leaving for East Point which was necessary to be at work next morning and telling Mr. Sample I would be back next evening. Next day Mr. Sample looked me up at Atlanta Tent and Awning Co met him before he reached plant showed him what I was doing and thinking it best went back to town to see him off on train missing train on purpose we came back to rooms where he threatened trouble and was going to make it his business by calling Fulton Bag and C.M. I then told him if he was so interested that his daughter should be treated right and telling him that he was hurting her most by causing trouble. I would let him know my business in Atlanta and why I could not do better. Believing that he could find out knowing that no one in Atlanta besides Mr. G. Elsas and Mr. Neely who he refused to see Mr. Sample told Mr Baker the super and other Bag Co employees what I had been doing personally and present occupation thereby uncovering me. In the meantime I was out to East Point and reported that evening to Mr. Neely who told me to meet him at 10 O'clock who then notified me that Mr. Sample had uncovered me. I immediately left for St. Louis, Mr. Neely requested me to write him on arriving at my destination and treated me very cordially saying he was sorry to see me leave as everything had been progressing so very good. As far as I had gone Mr. Sample seeing his mistake has left for his home and decided in the future to leave me alone and will apologize to Mr. Stockman for his actions in Atlanta.
