Oper. # C185 Wed May 15, 1918 Special Work Reporting at 7AM resumed duties in sewing room. I have learned that Mr. Davis has experience as a machinist told me if he had a small lathe he would do work that is now being sent to machines shop. He has a great deal of spare time in which he could do it. Estella Mitchell does nearly all of the changing of stitches for the girls. Joe Youkum does the cleaning and oiling fixing belts and Mr. Davis merely adjusts machines and small repair when machine is bad it goes to the shop. We have had only 2 machines to adjust in the last two days and suggest to look over the matter of equipping Mr. Davis work room with lathes and so forth and know that he can do nearly all of the repairing for his wages which now costs the Co another mans time and is a loss. At present machines are made work longer than they should with necessary equipment it would reduce repair bills worn out parts bad work and ill feeling among employees. Cutting room having had a complete breakdown, Mr. Ireland reported all machines would be in good order for some time to come. Our cutting machines which is working bad and also needs attention at once. Mr. Ireland said he would let it stay till Mr. Hasty got back and was going to show it to him. I suggest he be informed to discontinue use of machines before parts are ruined, He said there was a which in knife that filed with foreign material which causes knifes to slip and jump and make machine work very hard causing great wear on parts and bearings machine will not cut 28 in. goods Machine is the east one of the twin power cutters. I suggest cutting machine man operator give more assistance in looking after machines production. I asked him why he did not do so , told me he was just one of the hands and did not want to have anymore work than possible.
